Ireland’s Subtitle Film Festival Celebrates the Best of European Cinema

uropean cinema will be celebrated in the week-long Subtitle Film Festival (21-27 November) in the medieval Irish city of Kilkenny.
Admired for its thriving arts scene and festivals, Kilkenny’s population will be swelled by 150+ international casting directors, agents and actors in town for the annual showcase of the best of non-English language film.
Reinforcing the festival’s credentials as Ireland’s portal to the best of European cinema, half of the screenings will be Irish premieres, many will have already won international awards, and a handful will be their country’s submission for next year’s Oscars.
Subtitle: where cinema speaks one language
For the programme of screenings in intimate venues across this small town, festival founder Richard Cook and his team has hand-selected 32 thrillers, dramas and comedies from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Romania, Germany, Belgium, France, Serbia, Hungary, Italy, Iceland, Poland, The Netherlands, Russia, Georgia and The Czech Republic.
Subtitle stands out in a crowded calendar with a focus on bringing together the cream of Europe’s actors with casting directors from across Europe and the rest of the world.
Young Serbian actor Slaven Doslo (right) is flying to Kilkenny to host the Irish premiere of acclaimed director Stevan Filipovic’s multi award-winning film Next to Me (Pored Mene).
Actor Roland Møller will present Denmark’s 2016 Oscar submission, Land of Mine, and Finnish star Jarkko Lahti will host the Irish premiere of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.
Among the acclaimed directors, Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu will present Graduation (Best Director at Cannes 2016), director Paloma Valdebenito will host her film Out of Love. Russian director Aleksander Kott will be busy with two films in the programme: Test and Insight.
Cream of European cinema screens to Irish audiences
A highlight is sure to be Dutch director Mijke de Jong, who will be in town to present the searing drama Layla M, a film charting the gradual radicalisation of a young Muslim woman growing up in Amsterdam.
Others actors attending the festival include Tina Dalakishvili (Star), Dawid Ogrodnik (The Last Family), Vlad Ivanov (Graduation), Jarkko Lahti (The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki), Manal Issa (Parisienne), Krista Kosonen (The Midwife) and Nora El Koussour (Layla M).
Daniil Vorobyov will bring two films to the festival (Eastern Boys, About Love), Alina Grigore (Illegitimate), Ravshana Kurkova (About Love), Roland Møller (Land of Mine), and Laura Kjær (When the Sun Shines).
The Subtitle Film Festival was founded by Richard Cook, who has created and grown other successful local events and festivals. Subtitle works in association with Spotlight, a leading website connecting casting directors and actors.
The festival will close on the Sunday with the Angela Awards, hosted by Irish actress Victoria Smurfit.
