Vasko Lipovac cyclists on display in London
As the British leg of the Tour de France becomes a faint memory, the sight of one group of brightly coloured cyclists still lights up the City of London, thanks to the Croatian Embassy and the British-Croatian Society.
Unveiled by the Croatian Ambassador to London Ivan Grdesic as part of Broadgate’s Summer of Sport, the Cyclus display shows a group of adults and children enjoying the thrill of the road.
At first glance, these plump and rounded riders by award-winning artist Vasko Lipovac are not the usual sporty type.
But a closer look shows them to be full of life and real character.
Fans of Lipovac’s work will be very familiar with his work, although most Londoners will be pleased simply by the smiles that these sculptures evoke.
Vasko Lipovac: From Kotor to Split
Vasko Lipovac was born in Kotor, Montenegro, in 1931, into a family whose love of the arts filled their family home. Vasko went on to study applied arts in Zagreb, Croatia, and then moved to the coastal town of Split in 1967, where he lived and worked as a painter, sculptor and designer until his death in 2006.
It was the Dalmatian light and life that led him to create his own figurative world of brightly coloured characters, such as the team of cyclists to be seen on display in London this month, at Exchange Square, Broadgate and then in the lobby of Broadgate Tower, 201 Bishopsgate.
In the nature of his previous exhibitions, this show of his work is a one-off and comes with the support of his family. It comes to London with the assistance of the Embassy of Croatia, the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Lesic Dimitri Palace Hotel and the British-Croatian Society.
