Nikola Tesla To Be Celebrated In London

The life and work of Nikola Tesla will be celebrated in London, thanks to the efforts of a British Serb with a personal mission to place the great scientist back in the limelight. “Tesla is widely overlooked for his achievements and we want to contribute to correcting that situation,’ event organiser Milica Brkic told Wild Rooster. “Teaching can often avoid mention of the vital role he played in the development of so much technology that we take for granted. We want to be part of the change that will see Tesla achieve the recognition he deserves.”

A series of exhibitions, talks and screenings is being brought together, in collaboration with London’s Embassy of the Republic of Serbia and the Museum of Nikola Tesla, Belgrade, to broaden awareness of Tesla and his work. The launch of this programme will be in London on 10 July, which would have been Tesla’s 156th birthday.

The Tesla Tribute at London’s Serbian Museum will start at 7pm, with organisers and representatives of the UK Serbian community outlining their plans, before the screening of a twenty-minute film (in English with Serbian subtitles) to showcase some of Tesla’s ideas and inventions. This will be followed by a chance to discuss the film and ask questions about the issues it raises. All those who are interested in attending this event should register for free tickets here: http://teslabirthdaytribute-efbevent.eventbrite.co.uk/.

“We have planned a tremendous series of events to celebrate the life of the great man Nikola Tesla,’ said Milica. “If the arrangements can be made, the highlight of our programme will be an exhibition in London, in collaboration with Belgrade’s Museum of Nikola Tesla.”

This programme is especially well timed, as Nikola Tesla is set to hit cinema screens with two film productions on his life and work. The first, Fragments of Olympus, is being filmed in New York State, using many original locations to add authenticity to the movie. This story, focusing on the invention of a so-called death ray, will face stiff competition from a big-budget production with Hollywood heavyweight Christian Bale said to be first in line to star as Tesla. Serbian producer and screenwriter Vladimir Rajčić and Oscar-winning director Branko Lustig are still confirming details of the film, which will feature Croatian actor Rade Šerbedžija and Lolita Davidović, a Canadian actress of Serbian descent.

Michael, as far as I am aware, Rade is a Croatian actor (born in Bunic near Udbina, now Croatia) who graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. He is also said to be of Serb origin. Do you have reason to believe this could be incorrect?

Very interesting. Rade and Tesla are born in the same area in Lika and they are both Serbs. For Tesla it was obvious because his father was orthodox priest, however this area was populated by Serbs until Oluja 1995. He is also now citizen of both Croatia and Serbia.
Since he say for himself that he is yugo nostalgiest it is incorrect to call him Croatian or Serbian actor. Actualy it is incorrect to favorize any of those.

Sorry for posting so late on this thread but just to clarify the matter in terms of Rade Serbedzija, he is a Croatian citizen of serb ethnicity. He is not a ‘Serbian’ since this would denote that he was born in Serbia, however he is Serb from Croatia or as often reffered to a ‘Croatian Serb’, in exactly the same way as Tesla.
